Brave New World
Reflection
1. Why did you choose the medium you did? For my final project, I made a clay sculpture of an arm to represent my writing piece. I wanted my art piece to be strong, as well as a little creepy, like my writing. I felt that a 3D sculpture would be best. I thought that if I used Photoshop or drew something, it wouldn’t be as real, wouldn’t give my audience the proper feeling I was trying to convey. 2. How were you able to get your idea across using the basics (art elements and principles)? I must admit, I wasn't really focusing on the basics while I was making my sculpture. The way I had been taught the basics didn't really relate to sculptures, more to photos or drawings. But of course I did use some of them, even if I didn't realize it at first. I wanted the piece to simple, as to convey more mystery. So I kept the clay in its natural color and only made the details like pronounced veins visible. I wanted people to use their imagination in what this piece meant. 3. If you were to do it all over again, would you do it the same way or what specifically would you change about your process on this project? I am very proud of this project and how I did it. It was one of my favorites and don’t think I would change what I did. I used my time well and stayed focused, I made beautiful work and I’m good with the process in making it. |
Brochure
For this project we had to use the program Adobe InDesign to create a brochure about a certain Egyptian art piece. (Click any image to enlarge)
Prehistoric AnimalsFor this, we had to draw a prehistoric animal, scan it into the computer and then use Photoshop and Illustrator to manipulate it. As you look through my manipulated drawings, it may seem like some them are the same, but I assure you, they are different in slight ways.

Stop Motion Animation
This was a great project to explore the program Adobe Flash. I really like this project because we were free to explore Flash and to make our project the way that we wanted to. I really like the way stop-motion animation looks and it was so fun creating this final version. I would love to keep exploring the way of stop-motion and hope to develop a skill of it. While this was my first time doing stop-motion, as well as using Flash to make my intro and credits, I think I did a fairly good job. Hopefully you'll agree with me!

Tragedy Play Poster
For this project, we had to make a poster for our tragedy play we made in humanities. Since my play was set in a school, I chose to represent that with the blue lines receding into the distance, like a hallway. I also wanted to show that in my view, I believe that defense spending will always be a problem and for how ever long we will probably still have difficultly spending our country's money so everyone is happy. The title "Out of Time" represents the tragic hero, Luca, who has leukemia and doesn't have a long time to live. The title also represents who another character, Nickolai, who is learning about defense spending from Luca but understands later at the end of the play. I enjoyed making this project because we got to show our own perspective on our play and use our creativeness to show our ideas.

Essential Questions
1.What makes an engaging book cover? For me, an engaging or interesting book cover draws me in when I first look at it. It conveys a sense of "Read me! Read me!" and also a bit of mystery. Cluttered or messy book covers usually draw my attention away from the actual story and make me think that the writing inside was just as ill-planned. Of course you're not supposed to "judge a book by its cover", but I mean it seems like a book cover can almost always give you the mood of the book or tone of the writing. 2. How and why is art used as a vehicle for communication? Art can have feeling, it can have mood and it can have tone. A painting of gray clouds and a vast frozen field can have a cold and miserable feel to it. Or a photo of a circus with laughing children playing around can give a feel of excitement and happiness. I believe that we use art as this vehicle to help us understand how we feel. We all can learn from what art we appreciate more. Everyone has preferences, so we use art to express our feelings and opinions. 3.To what extent does a work of art depend on the viewer's point of view? I believe that when looking at a piece of art work, we all tend to look at it differently. We have had different life experiences and see things our own way. I think that all art work in some way depends on the view point. If the artist makes a piece a piece of art work as clear cut and obvious as possible than it doesn't take much imagination or understanding for the viewers. But if an artist were to paint, for example, a blue dot on a piece of paper, than it would be up to the viewers to understand what it means or symbolizes. |
Teacher/Animal Poster Project
At first I had no clue what I was going to create for my poster. I was thinking I would put my digital arts teacher, Roxy, on a dinosaur body and put her in the ocean. But then I remembered learning about Atlas, the Greek god who held up the world. For some reason I thought that would be really funny to incorporate into my poster. When I was browsing the pictures of my teachers, I saw one of my Physics teacher, Dave Heerschap. He sometimes jokes that he's king of the world and I had an idea that I could put his face on the world that Atlas would be holding to show that he acts like that. To find a picture of Atlas, I wanted a straight on picture of the statue that is in New York City, but of course, searching on the internet, I couldn't find exactly the picture I wanted. The option was either to travel to New York and get the picture myself or to think of some other way I could represent Atlas. Since it was pretty obvious that I couldn't travel to New York at a moments notice, I had to think of another way to show Atlas. I realized that weight-lifters were probably going to the best Atlas replacements. After all, they're strong and they have that some position where they look like lifting up the world. I chose the boy because at first i was going to use Heerschap's face again. Then he would be holding up himself, but as a little kid. But after trying that, I didn't really like it. So instead of Heerschap's face, I used parts of Michael Ackerman's, the head of school, face for the boy.
