The Outsiders Seminar Reflection
Reaction: I want to react to my own statement that I made when I was addressing the question about what types of masks Ponyboy wears. I said that before the rumble, Ponyboy asked Soda, I believe, to pretend that Pony was feeling okay enough to go to the rumble ever though he wasn’t feeling too hot. Ponyboy had to wear this mask, as well as other masks, to I guess feel as though he is part of his gang and to gain the acceptance of his friends.
Connections: when we were discussing a question about how The Outsiders was written and if the Greasers or the Socs had it worse, I connected that with a similar question we had discussed earlier in the year, do boys or girls have it worse? I connected that to this because who really knows? It all depends on the individual on that specific day or year and when you think about it, everyone has it hard in different ways so it’s hard to make that call. Self-evaluation: I believe I did a good job referring back to the text and bringing up new ideas. I think I could work on making more personal and deep connections with the text and how everything relates to me. Most beautiful line: “...don’t be so bugged over being a Greaser. You still have a lot of time to make yourself be what you want. There’s still good in the world.” I like this quote on page 179 because it shows that no matter whom you are, you can always try and shape who you become. Even with all the stereotyping and hating that goes on today, we can still make it and not fall into the cycle. I love this quote because it relates to what I think, I can always try and break the cycle of socialization and you should never give up trying to do so. |
